HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Volleyball Team dropped a pivotal SSAC match, falling to Blue Mountain Christian in four sets Saturday afternoon at the Ben Waddle Complex.
Both teams were dialed in from the start, with neither leading by more than two points until BMCU took a 17-14 lead. Carey quickly erased the three-point deficit to tie the set but that would be as close as they would get. The Toppers retook the lead for good with three straight points of their own before going on to take the set 25-21.
The Lady Crusaders quickly forgot about the first set, jumping out to an early 8-2 advantage to start the second set. However, Blue Mountain slowly fought their way back, eventually taking a 17-16 lead. From there things were like the first set in that neither team held a lead larger than two points. But with the set tied at 24 all, the Toppers completed the comeback, picking up back-to-back kills to take the set and the 2-0 lead.
Carey got off to another good start in the third set, building an early 11-5 advantage. Just like in the set before, BMCU battled to get within two points at 12-10. However, the Lady Crusaders responded with a 5-0 run and this time they would not let the Toppers back into the set, stretching their lead even further before taking the set 25-15.
After a back and forth start to the fourth set, the Toppers slowly started to pull away, taking a 14-6 advantage. Carey continued to fight their way back, eventually cutting the deficit to just two at 17-15. However, Blue Mountain shut down any hope of a comeback, as they went on a 6-0 run to pull away for good.
Suelen Lima led the attack with seventeen kills and twelve digs with Elaina Anderson and Marcella Hermont each finishing with ten kills. Katarina Vulic picked up 43 assists while Gabriela Maceira picked up thirteen digs.
Carey is back in action Wednesday, October 30, as they travel to Jackson, Miss. to take on Tougaloo College. Play is scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm.
