The University of Southern Mississippi Track and Field Team is on their way to the regional championship and we got a behind the scene look at how the team prepares. Recently, Southern Miss hosted its last home track and field event in which some of the teams track stars competed for the first time since being injured.
"We also had a few kids to come back from injury," University of Southern Mississippi's Head Track and Field Coach Jon Stuart told Hattiesburg News.
"Adrian Harris he ran an 800 meter just coming back from a hamstring injury and he did a good job there. I think he was second overall in the 800," Coach Stuart exclaimed.
We caught up with Southern Miss Track Star Adrian Harris at USM last home track event after he finished competing.
"My name is Adrian Harris. I'm a grad student. This my first year at Southern Mississippi. I been out these last few months. Today was my first competition back. I ran the 800 today. It was tuff but just happy to be able to run again!" Adrian said.
Adrian is the University of Southern Mississippi's record holder for indoor 4x4 and holds the 500 meter second all time University of Southern Mississippi record in school history.
On the Road to Regionals, Hattiesburg News also caught up with two of Southern Miss biggest track stars, Savi'a Varnell and Trinity Benson. Both stars were practicing hard preparing for regionals.
"To prepare for these races, get myself in this zone get out of that 'oh the season over' because it's not over for me. Not yet!" said Track Star Savi'a.
Savi'a holds the University of Southern Mississippi's record for 4x4 indoor, Sunbelt Conference record holder for 4x4 outdoor, the University of Southern Mississippi's record for 4x1, and is the runner-up in the 400m conference championship 2023.
Trinity spoke about her preparation for regionals. Hattiesburg News asked what is she doing to prepare.
"Not doing too much because it's the end of the season and I'm a little beat up. So just doing general stuff to stay in shape so I'm not out of shape when I have to run up against really fast people," Trinity said.
Trinity is the 2023 400 meter Sunbelt Champion, the 2024 60 meter indoor champion, the University of Southern Mississippi record holder for the 300 meter, 4x4 indoor & outdoor, and the Sunbelt Conference record holder for 4x4 outdoor.
"Just excited about the next few weeks. This is what we all do it for championship season. This is what it's all about!" Coach Stuart excitedly said.
