Residents at the South Park Village Apartments are tired of the shitshow; literally. Residents reached out to Hattiesburg News to say this has become a common event for the sewer to overflow on the sidewalks, in the grass, and on the side of buildings as well as in the homes, flowing out of tubs and sinks. This could not only be potentially illegal but also very unhealthy for residents, many of which are already living in poverty as single parents with kids.
We reached out to Mayor Johnny Magee's Office about finding resolutions but we were unsuccessful. The City of Laurel does not own the property. However, the mayor's office is aware of the situation and has been in contact with the property. "Our Public Works Director Tyrone Russell has been in contact with the property," said Rachelle Jones of the Mayor's Office.
Rachel went on to say, "We're told that a private company has been hired to clean it up but because of the weather they are currently unable to do so." The mayor's office said that they could report the situation to MDEQ but the city don't think it's met the standard to bring in the state at this time."
This is a developing story.
