Lady Crusaders Fall to Mobile in Five Sets

MOBILE, Ala. – The William Carey Volleyball Team dropped a pivotal SSAC match, falling to Mobile in five sets Friday night at Pharr Gym

The tone was set early, as to what type of match was going to unfold at Pharr Gym. The Rams jumped out to an early 9-5 lead but a service error by Mobile followed by an ace from Marcella Hermont and back-to-back kills by Elaina Anderson tied the set. Mobile quickly retook the lead but each time Carey responded tying the set until another service error gave the Lady Crusaders a 14-13 lead. From there WCU slowly pulled away to take the set 25-22.

The battle continued in the second set, as neither team led by more than three points. Carey on multiple occasions held the lead but each time the Rams answered to tie the set. With WCU holding a 23-22 lead, Mobile got a kill from Layton Adams followed by an attack error from Carey to take the lead and would go on to take the set 25-23.

After trading points at the start of the third set, the Lady Crusader offense caught fire going on a 9-0 run with six of the points coming off kills and two coming from blocks to take a 11-2 lead. From there Carey would cruise to a 25-16 victory.

The fourth set was like the third set only it was the Rams that jumped out to a big lead. With Mobile leading 10-9, they used a 7-3 run to pull away. However, Carey battled back to cut the deficit to just two points at 23-21 but that would be as close as they would get, as the Rams would pick up the next two points to take the set and force the deciding fifth set.

Once again both teams traded points at the start but Mobile slowly started to pull away to take a 9-5 lead. Carey managed to get within two at 9-7 but the Rams responded with six straight points to take the set and the match.

Sofia Bettini led the attack with 16 kills. Marcella Hermont added 15 kills and 12 digs with Suelen Lima having 12 kills and ten digs. Katarina Vulic picked up 51 assists and 16 digs while Kayla Benedic had 17 digs.

Carey is back in action Monday, November 4, as they return home to take on Talladega College in non-conference action. Play is set to begin at 6:00 pm at the Ben Waddle Complex.
