TALLADEGA, Ala. – The William Carey Women's Basketball Team took control early to defeat Talladega College 68-40 Wednesday night.
"We got off to a great start and really worked on stretching our lead," said Head Coach Tracy English. "We let a nice lead get away from us last week and worked on that this week. Good win for us."
The Lady Crusaders found their stride early, as Kolten Blakeney, Shaneal Corpuz, and Jenna Garriga combined for the first eight points of the game. Carey kept the tempo going, stretching their lead to 20-8 at the end of the quarter on 72 percent shooting from the floor.
The Lady Crusaders continued to fire on all cylinders in the second quarter, maintaining a double lead the entire quarter with Anna Rose Engle making a three-point basket with a minute remaining, to give WCU their largest lead at 21 points before taking a 37-18 lead into the break.
Rose Warren opened the third quarter with a three-point basket followed by a Leah Sutton layup and from there Carey ran away with the game, as they stretched their lead to twenty-eight points midway through the quarter before going on to take a 56-26 lead into the fourth quarter.
It was much of the same in the fourth quarter, as WCU lead by as many as thirty-six points on their way to victory. For the game, the Lady Crusader offense shot 52 percent from floor while shooting 47 percent from beyond the arc.
Kolten Blakeney led the offense with fifteen points. Jenna Garriga and Shaneal Corpuz finished with ten points while Meyah Doyle picked up seven rebounds in five minutes.
Carey is back in action Monday, November 11, as they head across town to take on Southern Mississippi in an exhibition contest. Play is set to begin at 6:00 pm at Reed Green Coliseum.
