This Saturday, there will be a FREE Community Cookout in celebration of Juneteenth at Vernon Dahmer Park, 1000 Country Club Rd, Hattiesburg, MS beginning at 10:00am and last until 2:00pm. The event includes a baseball tournament, swimming, free food, basketball and more.
While celebrating Juneteenth, the community will also celebrate and honor the life or Marcus "MJ" Daniels, the star Southern Miss Athlete that was tragically killed a few days ago, by dedicating the day to him.
At the request of Marcus family, there will be a moment of silence at 1:00pm. During this time, Marcus family will be escorted into George County High School, where his funeral will take place, in which his family will say their final goodbyes, seeing Mj for the last time.
THE COMMUNITY IS ENCOURAGED TO COME OUT AND SIGN THE MEMORIAL BANNER IN HONOR OF MARCUS 'MJ' DANIELS JR. THAT WILL BE PRESENTED TO HIS FAMILY."
In addition to the free cookout, MarJac Poultry will provide frozen chicken to needy families. There will be a freezer truck at Vernon Dahmer Park with chicken to give away for free to families that need it the most.
Several local businesses and organizations have come together to make this event possible including Walmart, Mar Jac, Office Depot, Popeye's, The Mr. Hattiesburg Foundation, The City of Hattiesburg, and The HMG Firm.
