HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Men's Basketball dropped their third straight game, falling to Talladega College 75-59 Wednesday afternoon at Clinton Gym.
"That was a tough game for us," said Head Coach Steve Knight. "Talladega played an exceptional second half and we did not respond on either end. We must get more consistent play from our team. This is two straight games that we shot terribly the first half, but our defense kept us in the game. But in the second half, we did not maintain our defensive effort. Lots to improve on for sure."
Both teams got off to a slow start, but the Tornadoes took the early 11-7 lead after five minutes of play. After a pair of free throws by Makeem Roberts made it 11-10 Talladega, Ankerion Gross put WCU ahead for the first time with a three pointer with eleven minutes remaining. From there things went back and forth until with seven minutes left, the Tornadoes pulled away to a 22-15 advantage.
The Crusaders continued to battle and a three pointer by Jamar Jenkins put Carey within two at 28-26 with two minutes left in the half. Over the final two minutes both teams battled on both ends of the floor with Talladega taking a 32-28 lead into the break.
Coming out of the break, the Crusaders kept on battling, cutting the deficit to three on multiple occasions. However, with the Tornadoes leading 42-39 with under fifteen minutes to play used a 5-0 run to pull away for good. From there, Talladega led by as many as eighteen points on their way to victory.
Cam Brown led the offense with 18 points. Makeem Roberts added 13 points with Ankerion Gross finishing with 12 points.
Carey is back in action Thursday, December 5, as they take on Faulkner University in conference action. Play is set to begin at 7:30 pm at Clinton Gym.
