Crusaders Battle Back to Defeat Talladega College

TALLADEGA, Ala. – In a repeat of their first game of the season, the William Carey Men's Basketball Team overcame a first half deficit to defeat Talladega College 73-67 Wednesday night.

"Our guys did a great job in the second half on both ends of the floor," said Head Coach Steve Knight. "Good defense led to transition baskets, and we were overly aggressive. Javeon Gordon got us going with his play off the bench and Jamar Jenkins did a fantastic job in his first game of the season. We had a lot of guys who played well in the second half. Totally a team win, and I am proud of their resolve."

Carey opened the game, taking a 5-2 lead only to see the Tornadoes quickly tie it up with a three-point basket. WCU once again took the lead on three pointers by Ashton Campbell and Chad Jones but just like before Talladega responded by tying it back up at eleven before going on to take the lead.

From there Carey stayed within striking distance but with Talladega leading 26-21 with four minutes remaining in the half, the Tornadoes pulled away, leading by as many as fourteen points before taking a 40-31 lead into the break.

In the opening six minutes of the second half, Dylan BrumfieldAshton Campbell, and Javeon Gordon combined for sixteen for the Crusaders to tie the game at forty-seven with Jones stealing the ball on the Tornadoes next possession, playing the ball forward to Gordon who slammed home the go-ahead basket.

The lead was short lived, as Talladega retook the lead less than a minute later and the battle was on from there. Both teams went back and forth over the next ten minutes with Talladega taking the lead with the Crusaders tying it up on multiple occasions. But with Carey trailing 61-58 with seven minutes remaining, a layup by Gordon put Carey within one point and just like in the first half a steal by Brumfield this time with Jamar Jenkins putting WCU ahead for good with a layup.

Over the final minutes of play, the Tornadoes managed to get within one point, but the Crusaders responded with Brumfield draining a three pointer with Jenkins and Makeem Roberts going six for six from the free throw line to seal the victory.

Makeem Roberts led the way with eighteen points on 5-7 shooting from the floor and 2-3 shooting from three-point range. Javeon Gordon added fifteen points with Jamar Jenkins finishing with twelve points.

Carey is back in action Saturday, November 9, as they take on Louisiana Christian in their home opener. Play is set to begin at 3:30 pm at Clinton Gym.
